During my A-Level Graphic Design course I have also looked into packaging. I was tasked with redesigning the packaging for the toiletry brand 'Faith in Nature', taking into consideration the graphic designers I had recently researched and the techniques they use in their work.
I started by doing some scamps for my design ideas, creating two different versions - one inspired by Saul Bass and the other by Keith Haring. My original plan was to chose between these two artists, however having seen how the designs had evolved I decided to keep both and submitted two versions.
The next stage was to choose which scamp from each design I thought was the most eye catching. For the Saul Bass inspired piece I wanted to base the image on the fruit the product smelt of, in this case an orange. I used geometric lines and bold two tone colours to emulate his work. I made this out of collage and added wording using a fine liner. I think it turned out well and captures Saul Bass' techniques.
Keith Haring's version started with scamps as well. Then, a detailed drawing was made for the design and photocopied. This allowed me to experiment with the colouring, as although I knew what colours I wanted to use, I wasn't sure whether to have a white background or a black one. I tried both options and couldn't chose a favourite, so had the idea to turn them into a shampoo and conditioner set. I digitally edited the writing to emulate this change. I put the design on a mock up, which I also did for the previous design to see what it would look like on a bottle. I love how this design turned out, and am very happy I used both versions.
