This was one of the first artists I studied in my A-Level Graphic Design course, Takahiro Kimura. He is a Japanese artist that is well-known for creating interesting faces out of collage and paint. We were asked to create a poster in his style that could potentially be used to advertise an exhibition of his at the Tate Modern.
This piece was created in stages. I began by taking grey scale printed photos of various people and piecing them together in a collage to create strange Frankenstein style portraits. Then I added chalk pastels to add vibrancy and colour followed by using white and black paint pens to add doodles and scribbles to link the different areas together and make it feel cohesive. It was important to incorporate the number '1000' into the poster as this was the tag line of the exhibition. I designed this separately using similar techniques to the poster and then added it when I was happy with the layout.
My final stage was to combine the elements to create a complete poster. I did this digitally and added some other details. I found this the hardest stage of the process, as I had neglected to think of the space I would need to add the words, and had made the base image too chaotic. However I found a way to make it work and am very happy with the result. I also experimented with scrunching and ripping the final piece to add further texture - I like the results I got.
