During my first year of A-level Fine Art, I was tasked with looking into Rembrandt's work and exploring the themes he used. One of these is Chiaroscuro which is the contrast of light and shadow to bring drama and tension to a piece. The other I looked into was Vanitas, which is a Latin word and refers to an image that includes iconography of the dead. This could include skulls and bones, rotting plants, or dead animals. This painting is in response to my research into the themes however it leans more into Vanitas as I struggled with the Chiaroscuro. I still think it turned out okay as it was one of the first large scale paintings I completed.
